Why Healthy Aging Is Becoming Rare

Why Healthy Aging Is Becoming Rare

The Mediterranean region includes several areas known as Blue Zones, where populations demonstrate exceptional longevity and extended health span. In contrast, population-level data from the United States suggest widespread concern about functional decline in later life, often beginning well before advanced age. While mortality itself is feared, a greater concern is prolonged morbidity, spending a decade or more with significant physical or cognitive impairment. Modern food systems have experienced substantial declines in nutrient density, a trend that shows little evidence of reversal. Epidemiological research indicates that fewer than 10 percent of individuals reach age 70 in optimal health, defined by the absence of major chronic disease, cognitive impairment, depression, and functional limitation.
